As the summer comes to an end, so does Phone2Action’s 2018 Civic Tech Fellowship Program. A STEM-based apprenticeship, our program provided 28 students from schools in all corners of the country with the chance to gain valuable skills and experience in the field of civic technology. From building new tools with artificial intelligence and data science, to creating advocacy campaign templates, to conducting search engine optimization for our website, our fellows had the opportunity to learn and engage with business leaders, partners, and clients. Our 2018 fellows have made a major impact on Phone2Action, enriching our organization and providing youthful energy and drive to important projects.
Every Friday, we gave fellows the stage to talk about their projects in front of the whole company. These Brown Bag Fellow Demos put the spotlight on the hard work and dedication these young minds have brought to Phone2Action and allowed everyone to learn from them. In addition to putting on presentations, each fellow wrote a blog post detailing their work and what they learned this summer. These posts can be found on both our company blog and our engineering blog.
Our Civic Tech Fellowship Program recruits students interested in technology innovation and civic engagement, with a special focus on minority, disabled, low-income, special needs, and international students. Every fellow is paid a living wage and takes on substantive projects that make a real impact on the company. Many projects that fellows work on are incorporated into the company’s core products and services.
Fellow projects came to a thrilling conclusion on Friday, August 10th, when Phone2Action celebrated the contributions of our 2018 Civic Tech Fellows with a graduation ceremony. Each of the fellows presented in front of the company, partners, and friends and family, highlighting their accomplishments and how they contributed to Phone2Action’s advocacy technology and mission.
This programs started in 2015 as a response to the White House call to action to technology companies to play a role in STEM education. Three years and plenty of fellows later, our Civic Tech Fellowship Program has become a staple for Phone2Action, establishing a talent pipeline that has propelled our startup to new heights. In 2018, Phone2Action invested $300,000 in salaries, trips, and benefits for the 28 full-time summer apprentices. But the work ethic, passion, and commitment to digital grassroots advocacy demonstrated by our fellows is, and will always be, priceless.
